February 2006
Duration: c. 2.15
Instrumentation: Solo Trombone
The french word Mélange means mixture or medley. While writing the piece, I found myself coming up with different ideas, not quite sure how to fit them together. These ideas did have certain aspects in common though: the intervals of seconds, fifths, and sevenths, as well as the centering on the fundamental pitches of the trombone (Bb and F). I developed the different themes to create fluency among them, especially in rhythm and articulation, eventually creating a disjunctive yet complete piece. There are three "parts" to the piece, creating a roadmap which flows through the tonal centers of Bb, A, and back to Bb.
